The Good, The Birdman, and The Beauty

I spent the past week looking forward to the Oscars (even though they left out Gone Girl for Best Picture). As the week went on, I started thinking about what drawings I could do this weekend. As I sat watching Million Dollar Baby on Friday, I realized that I wanted to draw some movie icons.

Of course, I started with Clint Eastwood. There aren't many people in Hollywood that have consistently  made so many good films. He directs. He acts. He writes music. The man has so many talents its hard to pick a favorite. On top of it all, he made me love the western (Unforgiven won Best Picture in 1992). While I think he should have been nominated for Best Director this year for American Sniper, I'm happy that his latest film is getting the attention it deserves.

I've seen all of this years nominees. Birdman was the film that surprised me the most. As I watched it unfold, I kept thinking how similar the plot was to Black Swan (without the ballet slippers). I kept hoping he was completely nuts, and when the end of the film came….. Well, I don't want to spoil it for you if you haven't seen it.

The acting in Birdman was amazing. That is saying a lot, because I don't like Ed Norton. I won't be at all disappointed if Michael Keaton wins Best Actor, even if it does mean that my main squeeze, Benedict Cumberbatch, walks away empty handed.

An Oscar drawing series wouldn't be complete without a past icon. When I decided to finally do an Elizabeth Taylor drawing, one that I have been putting off for years because I feared I couldn't do her justice, I realized how much I miss her presence in today's Hollywood. She was glamorous. She was beautiful. She was timeless.

I wanted to show her pure beauty. I left off the jewels and the gowns. I kept the makeup limited to her lipstick. This is what Elizabeth Taylor was, and is, to me. She is the icon of all icons.

While the stars are wandering up the red carpet, I hope all your favorites win, and that Benedict Cumberbatch gives us another #cumberbomb.
